On the fourth day of the first Test on Wednesday, South Africa lost 2 wickets for 5 runs. Neil Brand and Edward Moore were dismissed within the first four overs.
Brand was bowled by New Zealand captain Tim Southee for three runs. Moore was dismissed by Matt Henry for no runs after 8 balls.
Zubayr Hamza and Raynard van Tonder’s 63-runs partnership put Proteas some way ahead.
But Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson didn’t let them go far. For 31 runs, he dismissed Tonder, and for 36 runs, Hamza.
Keegan Petersen and David Bedingham put on 105 off 143 balls.
Bedingham amassed 87 runs off just 96 balls, hit three sixes and thirteen boundaries in the innings and Petersen scored 16 runs.
David Bedingham is the only South African batsman to score a fifty in two innings.
The team’s innings were limited to 247 runs. Out of 56 balls, Ruan de Swardt scored 34 runs. And Dane Paterson hit 17 balls for 15 runs.
Set to bat with a target of 529 runs, the new Proteas were bowled out for 247 runs. As a result New Zealand won by 281 runs. In the history of Test cricket, this is their second-largest victory by runs.
The South African XI, who has made six debuts in this series-opening encounter at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui was unable to muster much resistance against the bowlers from kiwis throughout this innings. In the first inning, Proteas managed just 162 runs.
Kyle Jamieson took 4 wickets off 58 runs in second innings. And Mitchell Santner grabbed 3 wickets with 59 runs.
Tim Southee, Matt Henry and Gleenn Phillips collected 1 wicket each.
Rachin Ravindra scored 240 runs with the bat and 2 wickets with the ball in the first innings and was recognized as the Man Of The Match in the first match of NZ vs SA Test Series and taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
